Individually designed mRNA cancer vaccines, tailored to the mutation profile of each patient's tumour, have shown encouraging results in early-phase melanoma trials.

The approach trains the immune system to recognise neoantigens unique to a patient's cancer, and is being tested alongside existing immunotherapy.

Larger randomised trials are underway. Researchers stress that results so far involve small numbers of patients and short follow-up.
